Strut Channel for Cable Tray Supports: What to Specify
Specify strut channel supports using load, span, orientation, material, finish and compatible connections, rather than channel dimensions alone.
Strut channel can form cross-members, frames and other approved cable tray support arrangements. Its continuous opening accepts compatible fittings and allows adjustment. A complete specification must describe the assembly, rather than simply request a “C channel”.
Specify material and geometry
Similar external dimensions do not guarantee equal performance. Thickness, steel grade, perforations and profile geometry matter. Eaton’s strut guidance highlights material verification and traceability when validating loading data.
Separate the support dimensions
For a suspended cross-member, the distance between hanger rods is its support span. The spacing between successive hangers along the tray affects how much tray and cable load reaches each support. These are different dimensions and both require review.
Use the correct table or calculation for the channel orientation, support condition and load arrangement. A uniformly distributed-load rating cannot automatically be applied to a concentrated load. Check required deflection limits as well as resistance.
Check the entire connection chain
Channel nuts, bolts, brackets, rods, bases and anchors need compatible dimensions and documented suitability. Include every supported service and its position when assessing a shared hanger.
