Cable tray fittings and accessories: types and what each one is for
Horizontal and vertical bends, tees, crosses, reducers, splice plates, covers and supports. A simple guide to cable tray fittings and how to count them in your bill of quantities.
A real cable route is never a straight line. It turns, branches, rises, drops and changes size, and each of those points needs a fitting in the same size and finish as the tray. This guide explains each piece and what it is for.
Changing direction
- Horizontal bend: turns the route left or right on the same level, usually 90° or 45°.
- Inside riser: takes the route up, for example from floor to wall.
- Outside riser: takes the route down, for example from ceiling down to a panel.
Branching
- Tee: takes one branch off the main run.
- Cross: takes two opposite branches from one point.
Changing width
- Reducer: steps down from one width to a smaller one, e.g. 400 to 200 mm. Can be straight or offset (left / right).
Joining and finishing
- Splice plate / coupler: joins two tray lengths, usually supplied with galvanized bolts and nuts.
- End cap: closes the end of a run.
- Cover: protects cables from dust, water and falling objects; every bend and tee has a matching cover.
- Earth bonding strap: keeps earth continuity between lengths.
Supports
- Cantilever arm: carries the tray off a wall or column.
- Threaded-rod hanger: suspends the tray from the ceiling.
- Strut channel: used to build supports and trapeze hangers to any length.
- Beam clamp: fixes to steel beams without welding or drilling.
Counting fittings in your BOQ
- Walk the route on the drawings and count every turn, branch and size change.
- Splice plates: one per side at each joint between lengths. With 3 m lengths, every 3 m needs two plates and their bolts.
- Supports: typically one every 1.5–2 m, plus one near each bend and tee.
- Order fittings in the same finish as the tray to avoid rust at the joints.
Made to your size
We make all fittings in our own factory to match your tray size, thickness and finish: pre-galvanized, hot-dip galvanized, powder coated or stainless. See cable tray fittings and cantilever arms and brackets, or send us your drawings and we will prepare the bill of quantities.
