NEMA VE 2 Cable Tray Installation: Supports, Joints and the 2024 Reference

Understand NEMA VE 2, now listed as NEMA BI-50016-2024, and prepare questions about cable tray supports, joints, drawings and installation records.

NEMA VE 2 is a familiar reference in cable tray installation specifications. Understanding its purpose and the required edition helps project teams prepare the right documents before installation.

This article is an introduction and project-preparation checklist. It does not reproduce the standard or replace the specified document, approved drawings or manufacturer instructions.

What is NEMA VE 2?

NEMA VE 2 is the former designation of cable tray installation guidance. The ANSI store lists NEMA BI-50016-2024, Cable Tray Installation Guidelines, as formerly NEMA VE 2-2018. Its stated scope includes shipping, handling, storage and installation, with information on maintenance and system modification.

See the ANSI listing for the designation and scope. Where a contract names a particular VE 2 edition, obtain clarification before substituting a different edition.

Why “NEMA compliant” needs clarification

A quotation saying “NEMA compliant cable tray” does not define the complete supply and installation requirement. Request the document number, edition and intended scope, alongside approved dimensions, material, finish, load data and drawings.

A reference on a quotation is not itself a product certificate, test report or acceptance record for installed work. Ask for evidence relating to the actual system and project requirements.

Prepare the installation file

The following are suggested project questions, not quotations or clause numbering from NEMA:

  • Which reference and edition does the project require?
  • Does the material approval identify profile, thickness, material and finish?
  • Are route, level and service-coordination drawings approved?
  • Are system data and installation instructions available to the crew?
  • Are inspection procedures and acceptance responsibilities defined?

Resolve document conflicts through a recorded technical query. Do not transfer a detail from an unrelated manufacturer's system without approval.

Questions about supports and joints

Ask for support spacing, joint positions and fitting-support details to be identified in the approved drawings, with the relevant system data used for design. Confirm connection components and their installation and inspection requirements.

Do not choose support spacing from tray appearance or section length alone. Obtain any required tightening values and procedures from the approved instructions for the actual components.

Does a 3-metre section mean supports every 3 metres?

Section length and support span are separate dimensions. Rovana Trade prefers 3-metre sections for supply where project requirements and site conditions allow. That preference does not establish a permitted support span or load rating.

Read our 3-metre cable tray section guide to distinguish piece counting from support design. The designer reviews system load data and approved details for the installation.

Receiving and storage

Reconcile documents, quantities, material identity and condition at delivery. Link observations to the affected items and batches and define how outstanding concerns are resolved before release.

Use our site receiving checklist to organize records, then apply the approved product-specific handling and storage requirements.

Before handing over installed work

Keep approved drawings, inspection requests, observations and closure records linked. Have the responsible specialist define the required electrical checks, including bonding and grounding where applicable under the approved design and code.

A complete-looking route is not proof of compliance. Document and review changes to routes or components through the project procedure.

Frequently asked questions

Is the designation NEMA E2 or NEMA VE 2?

The familiar cable tray installation guide designation is NEMA VE 2. The 2024 edition is listed as NEMA BI-50016-2024. Include the full reference and edition in project documents.

Does it mandate 3-metre sections for every project?

We do not attribute that requirement to the guide. Three metres is our preferred supply length where appropriate; approved project documents determine the actual requirements.

Is this article sufficient for installation?

It helps explain the reference and prepare questions. Installation and acceptance require the approved technical documents, the contractually specified reference and qualified personnel.
