Hot-dip galvanized vs pre-galvanized cable tray: what is the difference?
Hot-dip galvanized and pre-galvanized cable trays look similar, but zinc thickness, edge protection, service life and price are very different. Here is how to choose.
One of the questions we hear most: should I take hot-dip galvanized or pre-galvanized cable tray? Both are zinc-coated to protect the steel from rust, but the galvanizing method is different, and that changes service life, price and where each can be installed.
Pre-galvanized
The steel coil arrives from the mill already galvanized. We cut, punch and bend it.
- Zinc thickness: thin, around 20 microns per side on common Z275 sheet.
- Cut edges and holes: left without zinc, because cutting happens after galvanizing.
- Look: smooth, bright and uniform.
- Price: lower.
- Best for: indoor, dry areas: offices, malls, hospitals, above false ceilings.
Hot-dip galvanized
The tray is fabricated first from black steel, then fully dipped in molten zinc at about 450 °C.
- Zinc thickness: much heavier. BS EN ISO 1461 requires a mean of at least 55 microns for steel 1.5–3 mm thick, and 45 microns below 1.5 mm.
- Cut edges and holes: fully covered, because galvanizing happens after fabrication.
- Look: matt grey, with some natural variation in shade.
- Price: higher: black steel plus galvanizing per kg.
- Best for: outdoor and humid locations: factories, power, water and wastewater plants, oil & gas, coastal sites.
Quick comparison
| Pre-galvanized | Hot-dip galvanized | |
|---|---|---|
| When galvanized | before fabrication | after fabrication |
| Zinc thickness | thin (~20 µm/side) | heavy (45–55 µm or more) |
| Edges and holes protected | no | yes |
| Location | indoor, dry | outdoor, humid, industrial |
| Service life | shorter | much longer |
| Price | lower | higher |
Which one should you choose?
- Inside an air-conditioned or dry building? Pre-galvanized is enough and saves money.
- Outdoors, in a humid or chemical plant, or near the sea? Hot-dip galvanized, or stainless 316 in very aggressive environments.
- Consultant on the project? Check the specification first. Most industrial specifications call for hot-dip galvanizing to BS EN ISO 1461 with a coating-thickness certificate.
How to check the galvanizing
Ask for the galvanizing certificate and a coating-thickness reading with a gauge.
