Cable tray profiles: U-shape, returned flange and snap-on explained

Not every cable tray has the same profile. Learn the difference between U-shape, returned flange and snap-on trays, which one suits your project, and how it affects the cover, weight and price.

When you order cable tray, width × height and thickness are not enough. You also need to specify the side profile, because it affects the tray's strength, how the cover fits, and the price.

1. U-shape (plain side)

The side rises straight at 90° with no return at the top.

  • Pros: simplest and cheapest profile, easy to cut and install on site.
  • Cons: sharper top edge, and weaker than the other profiles in large sizes.
  • Best for: small and medium sizes and indoor routes.

2. Returned flange

The top of each side is bent inwards by about 10 mm.

  • Pros: the return stiffens the side and protects cable insulation from the sharp edge during pulling.
  • Best for: large sizes, long spans, and consultant-supervised projects.

3. Snap-on

Each side has a special bend of about 15 mm designed so the cover snaps on without screws.

  • Pros: covers fit and come off quickly, with no loose screws.
  • Best for: fully covered routes that need frequent maintenance — factories, hospitals, electrical rooms.

Covers for each profile

Tray profileCover side
U-shapeabout 15 mm, fixed with screws or clips
Returned flangeabout 15 mm
Snap-onabout 25 mm, snaps onto the tray

Effect on weight and price

The extra bend on returned-flange and snap-on trays adds to the developed width of steel in each metre, so weight and price are slightly higher than a U-shape tray of the same size. The difference is small on wide trays and more noticeable on narrow ones.
